I have straight/blonde/smooth hair - why are some strands randomly very thick/bumpy/kinky/curly?

asked
These strands are dark brown, and kinky, very unlike the rest of my blond hair. They're distinctly thicker, so when I'm massaging my head I can like feel them. When I find one, if I run two fingers down it, between my nails it will sound almost like light snapping - like clink-clink-clink-clink - they're that kinky. And I've noticed they're much more likely to be split ends. I don't get split ends a lot, but these strands are so thick they're usually splitting at the bottom. Finally, some strands will just have that kinky/bumpiness in some places, like half the strand will have that roughness and the rest will be slippery smooth, or it will be in patches, like smooth-rough-smooth all the way to the end of the strand. Help? What are these?
